Anne Bourse

Born in 1982

Hometown: Paris

Born in 1982, Anne Bourse is a graduate of École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Lyon. Her work is traversed by whirling lines and letters evoking burlesque cartoons or psychedelic frescoes. They invade the surfaces of books, clothes and papers of all kinds. However — and although she works with different media, including painting, drawing, and textile or textual productions — her practice is predominantly cadenced by the continuous motion engaged by a writing of the self. Bourse’s work has no hierarchies. It might use a book about a contemporary artist, a Russian novel, a children’s book, a magazine about a cult in her neighbourhood, a treaty on rabies… Being unclear is important. Her practice is inhabited by elective affinities that make up the fictional community in which she works

Recent and upcoming solo exhibitions include Musée d’art moderne et contemporain de Saint-Étienne Métropole, Saint-Priest-en-Jarez; Kunsthalle Bremerhaven; Galerie Édouard Manet, Gennevilliers; and Crèvecoeur, Paris.

Her work has been shown in numerous group exhibitions, including Palais de Tokyo, Paris; Villa Empain, Brussels; Fondation Pernod Ricard, Paris; Scheusal, Berlin; Crédac, Ivry-sur-Seine; CAC Brétigny, Brétigny-sur-Orge; and Frac Île de France, Paris.
